I'd always wanted to go to South Korea so one Christmas I jumped at the chance of flying to Thailand - via Seoul.
The average temperature in Thailand in December is 27 degrees. In Seoul it's about 27 degrees lower than that 😊
This had always put me off transiting through Incheon Airport when in search of winter sun in SE Asia, but I was determined to make it happen this time.
To avoid packing heavy clothes, which I wouldn't need in time in Thailand, my technique for my layover in Seoul was simple. I would wear all my summer clothes, simultaneously.
It turned out not to be terribly effective against sub-zero temperatures, so I bought some cheap fingerless gloves and a beanie, plus a pair of Gangnam Style socks to amuse myself (that dates the trip for you) and I took off on a tour of the city.
One of the many things I instantly fell in love with during that single day and night spent freezing but fascinated in Seoul, was the juxtaposition of old and new. An ancient culture intermingling with the buzz and pace of a truly cutting edge metropolis - it was utterly intoxicating. There were also more coffee shops than I have ever seen in my life.
A proper visit to South Korea is high on my wishlist for 2019.
Have you been to South Korea, do you have any tips for me?
